The Neighborhood Gardener –
Taking UF/IFAS Online Gardening Resources in a New Direction

The new UF/IFAS Gardening Solutions website blossoms into a full resource in mid-October.

The site is based on the retiring "Gardening in a Minute" radio program and features a wealth of Florida-Friendly Landscaping™ and gardening information. More detail, larger photographs, how-to videos, and easier navigation will be featured as part of UF/IFAS Gardening Solutions.

It's our goal to bring you, Florida homeowners and gardeners, the best information about Florida-Friendly plants, sustainable landscape practices, and ways to beautify your yard and garden—all through UF/IFAS Gardening Solutions.

From blooming natives to heat-friendly vegetables, we'll share what works where in Florida's unique environment, with in-depth articles on popular plants.

  • Turfgrass and Lawn Care – the obsession of many Florida homeowners! We'll have advice on how to keep your lawn both attractive and Florida-Friendly.
  • Design – how to create a beautiful, sustainable home landscape, while observing water restrictions, HOA rules, heat waves, and all the unique environmental aspects of our state.
  • Care – from the newest fertilizer recommendations to mower maintenance, we'll have you covered.

For the past seven years, "Gardening in a Minute" has brought radio listeners helpful tips on Florida-Friendly gardening. The program, made possible by UF/IFAS, was only one part of the Center for Land Use Efficiency's mission to protect and conserve Florida's natural resources through research-based sustainable urban landscape practices.

The Center underwent a strategic communication plan in 2012 to refine its goals, and will now focus its efforts on other ways of connecting and communicating with Florida homeowners and gardeners, including maximizing our presence on the web and in social media.

And so, the last "Gardening in a Minute" segment  aired on WUFT's 89.1 FM and other Florida public radio stations on September 30th (the program can still be heard in rerun format on many of the same stations).

The Center staff and their producers at WUFT have enjoyed creating "Gardening in a Minute," and they wish to thank their listeners for being a part of the experience.
