American Holly (Ilex opaca)
American holly is an evergreen medium tree that reaches heights of 30 to 50 feet. It has a pyramid shape. The leaves are simple, alternate, oblong shaped, and two to four inches long. They usually have smooth, leathery upper surfaces. The leaf margin has several stiff, thorny spines and the tip is sharply pointed. The white flowers are not showy. The very showy fruits are shiny red berries.
